How voice search is helping to redefine SEO in 2019

Google voice search was launched back in 2012, but it has only been in the past year that marketers are taking notice as voice assistants like Google Home and Amazon Alexa become increasingly popular. As people have changed the ways that they now search, SEOs have to change the way in which they can be found. Keywords are now longer and more conversational than when Google was first launched.

How SEO and voice search is evolving

People are now using a variety of ways to find out information, find solutions and buy products. From laptops to smartwatches and mobile phones to home assistants, you can always find the information you need. People are also using voice search to find information about local businesses. This has given local businesses a great opportunity to take advantage of which they didn’t previously have on a small budget. There are ways that local businesses can drive awareness and become the sole results for a range of relevant keywords.

1. Optimise Your Business Listings
Claiming your Google My Business listing is a great way to help potential customers find you. You should ensure that your name, address and phone data are accurate as well as associating your listing with relevant categories. This is so Google can know what your business is.

2. Be Mobile Friendly
We have already spoken about the importance of ensuring your website is mobile-friendly. As voice search happens more often on a mobile device than a desktop or laptop, you need to ensure your website is viewable for these users. Your website also needs to have a fast load speed. Users don’t hang around waiting and will go to one of your competitors.

3. Create Content Answering Questions
Users speak differently to the way they search for keywords in search engines. For example, a user might type “nearby clothes shop”, but they will ask “where is a nearby clothes shop” when using voice search. There are some things you can do including answering the questions on your business listing and creating content that answers questions.

Predictions for the future of voice search

It is estimated that by 2020, 50% of all searches will be voice searches. Trust could slow the momentum of voice search as with all new digital features. Just as when Google’s paid ads were first launched, people were wary of using them but as time went on and Google made improvements, they are now widely used. However, people believe voice search is more intrusive and are more wary about being listened to. Just like paid ads, improvements will be made to voice search and more people will trust that their data is just as secure as it is by using their phone or laptop.
