Google Search Algorithm Update

The Google search algorithm update which occurred on August 1st has now been fully rolled out to everyone. Google has called it a ‘broad core algorithm’ update and said it does these updates several times a year. Based on industry research so far, it seems to have had a bigger impact on health & medical sites and ‘Your Money Your Life’ sites. However, many more sites in industries besides those have also seen the effects of the algorithm update. Google said: “Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains.”

To see if you have been affected by the update you should check your rankings in the SERPS. Google has stated there’s nothing you can do to “fix” your site apart. All you can do is offer a better experience, better content and a more useful website. As it’s a “global” update, it’s possible that every niche and type of website has seen impacts from it.

Who has been affected most?

Based on data and surveys, the main focus of the update seems to be on health and “Your Money Your Life” sites. Your money your life sites are focused on money and life events. Barry Schwartz, the founder of Search Engine Roundtable and CEO of RustyBrick collected survey data from over 300 websites that were affected by the algorithm update. The healthcare industry leads the way by quite some distance with 41.5%. The e-commerce industry comes second with 16% of sites being impacted by the update.

If your site is focused on this content, there’s a high chance that it’s been hit by the update. The best advice has been to optimise your site content, make the user experience better and keep making changes that can have positive impacts on your rankings.
